    Work as Worship

The phrase sounds like a Sunday sermon line, but it points to one of the oldest ideas in scripture: the same Hebrew word — avodah — means both "work" and "worship." Understanding that one word changes how you walk into the office on Monday.

    The Hebrew root: avodah

In the Hebrew Bible, avodah (עֲבוֹדָה) shows up to describe two things English keeps separate: tilling the ground (Genesis 2:15) and serving in the temple (Exodus 8:1). It's the same word. The biblical writers didn't think they were stretching a metaphor — they thought labor and liturgy were the same kind of act offered in different settings.

How early Christians carried it forward

The early church inherited this. Paul tells slaves and shopkeepers to work "as for the Lord and not for men" (Colossians 3:23). The Reformers later recovered the doctrine of vocation — the idea that a cobbler glorifies God by making good shoes, not by quitting to become a monk.

What it looks like Monday morning

    • Excellence as offering. Your output is the offering. Sloppy work is a poor sacrifice.
    • Integrity under pressure. The shortcut that nobody would notice still matters.
    • Service over self-promotion. Work as worship reframes the customer, teammate, or boss as someone you're serving, not using.
    • Rest as part of the rhythm. Worship includes Sabbath. Burnout is not faithfulness.

    Where to go deeper

Work Is Worship is our weekly show built around this exact idea — conversations with builders, pastors, and operators on what avodah looks like in their field.

    Frequently asked questions

What does 'work is worship' mean?+

It means ordinary labor — when done with skill, integrity, and for God's glory — is itself an act of worship, not a distraction from it. The Hebrew word avodah captures both meanings in a single term.

    Who said work is worship?+

The idea predates any single author — it's embedded in the Hebrew scriptures. The phrase has been popularized by Reformed teachers, Tim Keller, and the modern faith-and-work movement, but the theology comes straight from Genesis and the Psalms.

    Why is work called worship?+

Because in Hebrew, the same word (avodah) is used for the work of a farmer in Genesis 2:15 and the worship of priests in the temple. Scripture refuses to split sacred and secular labor.

Is work a form of worship?+

Yes — when it is done with excellence, honesty, and a posture of serving God and neighbor. Mediocre or dishonest work doesn't qualify just because the worker is a Christian.

What is the meaning of work is worship?+

It means your job — coding, teaching, parenting, building, serving — can be an offering to God in the same way singing in church can be. The location and the activity change; the worshipper doesn't.
